Search methods often use a linear ordering of keys. The obvious method here is the “binary search” method (binary, dichotomous, half division):

First the key k is compared to the middle key in the table, the result of the comparison allows to determine in which half of the table the search should be continued by applying the same procedure to it, etc.

The function returns the number of the searched key or N+1 if no key is found. BP never uses more than log2N+1 comparisons for both successful and unsuccessful searches.

This property follows from the fact that the number of records processed in each cycle is halved.

Interpolation search works in log(logN) operations if the data is uniformly distributed. As a rule, it is used only on very large tables, and several steps of interpolation search are made, and then binary or sequential variants are used on a small subarray.

Binary trees

Let us define a tree as a finite set T, which is either empty or has one specially labeled node, called the root, and all other nodes are contained in non-overlapping sets T1, T2,…, Tm, each of which is a tree. The trees T1, T2,…, Tm are called subtrees of the given root.

The number of subtrees m of a node is called the degree of the node. The degree of a tree is the maximum of the degrees of all nodes in the tree. If the relative order of subtrees T1, T2,…, Tm is important, the tree is said to be ordered. An ordered tree of degree two is called a binary tree. Thus, in a binary tree, each node has at most two subtrees (left, right).

There exist m-ary trees in which the semidegree of the outcome of each node is less than or equal to m. If the semidegree of the outcome of each vertex is exactly equal to either m or zero, then such a tree is called a complete m-ary tree.

When m=2, such trees are called binary trees, or complete binary trees, respectively.

A special kind of binary tree is a search tree organized in such a way that for each node T all the el- ters in the left subtree are less than the element of node T, and all the el- ters in the right subtree are greater than the element of node T.

SEARCH TREES play a special role in data processing algorithms. They are used in lexicographic tasks, construction of frequency dictionaries, data sorting tasks. The main advantage of this data structure is that it is ideal for the search problem. The place of each element can be found by moving from the root to the left or right depending on the value of the element.

To simplify the search procedure, you can use a tree with a barrier node (the last empty node z where the element to search for x is sent).

The main operations when working with search trees are tree search with inclusion of a new element and tree search with exclusion of an element. These tasks are widely used when the tree grows or shrinks during the program itself.

If you have ever encountered problems where you need to determine the best solution based on a certain set of constraints, you probably know that there is a dynamic programming method for this purpose. It is quite a powerful apparatus, and you can use it to solve problems of varying complexity, from finding the largest common subsequence to determining the most favorable combination of items for a backpack. If you want to learn how to apply this method, you need to understand how the dynamic programming apparatus works. All these questions we will consider in this material.

Description of the method

The concept of “dynamic programming” was invented and named in 1940 by Richard Bellman, and changed and supplemented its definition in 1953. Bellman had to spend a lot of time choosing the name, as his boss did not like mathematical terms. So the author of the definition chose the word “programming” instead of “planning” and the word “dynamic” to avoid derogatory and profanity-laced interpretations from his boss. This is how the name “dynamic programming” was formed.

The method of dynamic programming (DP) is one of the main tools for optimization and problem solving in computer science, economics, biology and other fields. In simple words, dynamic programming is a problem-solving method that is based on breaking down a complex problem into many smaller ones.

It is important to consider the following points:

To use this approach effectively, it is necessary to memorize the solutions of subproblems.
Subproblems have a common structure, which allows you to use a homogeneous way of solving them, instead of solving each one separately with different algorithms.

Why it is needed

Optimization problems are effectively solved with the help of DP, for example, if you need to find the largest or smallest value of a function. DP is also actively used in planning problems, where you need to determine the optimal sequence of actions.

Basic concepts

Let’s understand in more detail the basic concepts of the method.

One of the main concepts is the optimal substructure. What is it? In the dynamic programming method, we solve a problem by breaking it down into smaller ones. Optimal substructure means that we can get the best solution if we know the optimal solutions to each of the subproblems.
Another important concept is overlapping subtasks. Here we may encounter a situation where different subproblems have common parts. In such a case, we are said to have overlapping subtasks. To avoid solving the same problem many times, we save the results of subtasks in memory and reuse them while solving larger problems. This helps to speed up the solution process considerably.

For example, suppose we have a problem of finding the largest common subsequence of two strings. We can solve it by dynamic programming, breaking it into smaller subproblems – finding a common subsequence for substrings of each string. In this case, we face overlapping subproblems – the common subsequence for some substrings can already be calculated earlier and stored in memory. Thus, we can avoid repeated computations and solve the problem more efficiently.

DP is a problem solving methodology that is not just a formula or an algorithm, it is more about thinking about how to solve a problem.

This approach requires breaking down the problem into smaller, simpler subtasks (with smaller inputs such as a smaller number, a smaller array, or fewer customizable parameters).
Solutions to the smaller subtasks can be used to solve the larger original problem. An example is the computation of Fibonacci numbers.
It is important to make efficient use of the solutions of the subproblems, for example, by memorizing them, and to use a homogeneous solution method for all subproblems if they share a common structure.

Algorithm of the dynamic programming method

The algorithm of the dynamic programming method consists of several steps:

  • Defining the structure of the optimization problem. It is necessary to determine which parameters of the problem are variables, which are constants, what constraints exist on the variables;
  • Formulation of recursive formula. It is necessary to express the solution of the problem through the solutions of smaller subproblems. The recursive formula must be correct and have the property of optimal substructure;
  • Creating a table to store the results of subtasks. It is necessary to create a table where each cell will store the optimal solution for the corresponding subproblem;
  • Filling the table. It is necessary to fill the table, starting with the smallest subproblems and gradually moving to larger ones. When filling the table, a recursive formula is used;
  • Obtaining the solution of the original problem. The solution of the original problem is in the last cell of the table.

The algorithm of the DP method can be applied to a wide range of problems, including the problems of finding the shortest path in a graph, optimal work schedule, finding the maximum flow in the network and others. It has a number of advantages, but it also has disadvantages and requires quite a large amount of memory to store the results of subtasks.

Going from zero to a professional software engineer can be done solely with the help of free resources on the Internet. But developers who follow this path often ignore the concept of data structures. They think that this knowledge will not benefit them as they will only develop simple applications.

However, paying attention to data structures is important from the very beginning of the learning curve as they improve the efficiency of applications. While this doesn’t mean that you need to apply these structures everywhere – it is equally important to understand when they will be unnecessary.

What is a data structure?

Regardless of profession, everyday work involves data. A chef, a software engineer, or even a fisherman all work with some form of data.

Data structures are containers that store data in a specific format. This specific format gives the data structure certain qualities that distinguish it from other structures and make it suitable (or conversely, unsuitable) for certain usage scenarios.

Let’s take a look at some of the most important data structures that can help you create effective solutions.

Arrays

Arrays are one of the simplest and most commonly used data structures. Data structures such as queues and stacks are based on arrays and linked lists.

Each element in the array is assigned a positive integer that indicates the position of the element. This number is called an index. In most programming languages, indexes start at zero. This concept is called zero-based numbering.

There are two types of arrays: one-dimensional and multidimensional. The former are the simplest linear structures, while the latter are nested and include other arrays.

Basic operations with arrays

  • Get – get an array element by a specified index;
  • Insert – insert an array element by a given index;
  • Length – get the number of elements in the given array;
  • Delete – delete an array element by the specified index. It can be performed either by setting the undefined value or by copying the array elements, except for the one to be deleted, into a new array;
  • Update – updates the value of an array element by the specified index;
  • Traverse – loop through an array to perform functions on array items;
  • Search – search for a certain element in a given array using the selected algorithm.

There are several types of linked lists.

  • Single-link. The elements can only be traversed in the forward direction;
  • Double-linked. Elements can be traversed in both forward and backward directions. Nodes include an additional pointer, known as prev, pointing to the previous node;
  • Circular linked. These are linked lists in which the previous (prev) pointer of the “head” points to the “tail” and the next pointer of the “tail” points to the “head”.
    Basic operations with linked lists
  • Insertion – adding a node to a list. This can be done based on a desired location such as head, tail, or somewhere in the middle;
  • Delete – deleting a node at the beginning of the list or based on a specified key;
  • Display – displays the full list;
  • Search – search for a node in the given linked list;
  • Update – update the value of the node in the given key.

Application of linked lists

As building blocks of complex data structures such as queues, stacks, and some types of graphs.
In image slideshows, as the images follow each other strictly.
In dynamic structures for memory allocation.
In operating systems for easy tab switching.

Stack

A stack is a linear data structure that is created on the basis of arrays or linked lists. A stack follows the Last-In-First-Out (LIFO, “first-in-first-out”) principle, meaning that the last element to enter the stack will be the first to leave it. The reason why this structure is called a stack is that it can be visualized as a stack of books on a table.

Basic operations with stack

  • Push – insert an element into the upper part of the stack;
  • Pop – remove an element from the upper part of the stack and return the element;
  • Peek – view an element in the upper part of the stack;
  • isEmpty – check if the stack is empty.
    Application of stacks
  • In the browser navigation history;
  • To implement recursion;
  • In stack-based memory allocation.

Queue

Like a stack, a queue is another type of linear data structure based on either arrays or linked lists. Queues differ from stacks in that they are based on the First-In-First-Out (FIFO, “first-in-first-out”) principle, where the item that enters the queue first will be the first to leave it.

A real-world analogy of a “queue” data structure is a queue of people waiting to buy a movie ticket.

Basic operations with queues
Enqueue – inserting an element to the end of the queue.
Dequeue – deletes an element from the front of the queue.
Top/Peek – returns an element from the front of the queue without deleting it.
isEmpty – checks the contents of the queue.

Application of queues

Serving multiple requests on a single shared resource.
Flow control in multithreaded environments.
Load balancing.

Graph

A graph is a data structure that is a relationship of nodes, which are also called vertices. A pair (x,y) is called an edge. It indicates that node x is connected to node y. An edge can indicate weight/cost, that is, the cost of traveling along a path between two nodes.

Key Terms

  • Size – the number of edges in the graph;
  • Order – the number of vertices in the graph;
  • Contiguity – the case when two nodes are connected by the same edge;
  • Loop – a vertex connected by an edge to itself;
  • Isolated node – a node that is not connected to other nodes;
  • Graphs are divided into two types. They are distinguished mainly by the directions of the path between two vertices.

Tree

A tree is a hierarchical data structure consisting of vertices (nodes) and the edges that connect them. Trees are often used in artificial intelligence systems and complex algorithms because they provide an efficient approach to problem solving. A tree is a special type of graph that contains no cycles. Some argue that trees are completely different from graphs, but these arguments are subjective.

It’s important for developers to know at least the basics of these structures because when implemented correctly, they can help improve the efficiency of your applications.
